This picture shows Lieutenant Alan Hill, Lieutenant Lord John North and Chaplain Tom Harris in South Africa in May 1940. All died in Neptune. On far left is Sub Lieutenant E. Barrett and on far right is Lieutenant Tony Thackara both of whom survived. It is likely to have been the stag party before John North's wedding, with the Padre on hand to keep matters under control.\n\n

It is most likely that it was the stag party before John’s wedding – with the Padre on hand to keep matters under control!

Midshipman Nigel Fawcett’s journal dates these two photographs.  He describes it as “The Gunroom Picnic” including an overnight camp Monday/Tuesday 12/13 February 1940.  Neptune was in dry dock at Dakar, Senegal for bottom cleaning:  “We landed at a suitable spot between two villages but miles away from either at noon.” The photographs were probably taken on Tuesday morning as he describes it turning cold early and putting on several sweaters which accords with the photographs (and, of course, they are eating breakfast in the photographs!).

Two boats went: a cutter with Lord North in charge and Fawcett, Thomas, Bartlett, Frodsham, Duncan, Hardcastle & Jones; and a whaler with Sub Lieutenant Hill and Nash, Duff, Bickford, Howard and Holdsworth.

John North & Alan Hill died in HMS Neptune. Neville Frodsham died in HMS Hood on 24 May 1941. John Duncan joined submarines and died in HMS Untamed in the River Clyde.
